Causes and Types of Headache

Headache is the most common disease. The term headache is basically a pain or discomfort in the head or neck. Determining what the cause of a headache is can be a very difficult process for the physician and patient. Bear in mind that the brain itself does not feel pain. It has no pain sensors.

Causes of Headache:

There are many causes of Headache like due to eyestrain, too much working in front of computer, or with delicate equipment or wearing low lenses. A trip to the eye doctor may be able to fix this headache problem. Other causes can be more serious like meningitis, brain tumor, encephalitis or an injury to the head and can require treatment by a neurologist.

There are many other causes of headache like poor sleep, stress and caffeine withdrawal. Toothaches or sinus infections can also cause headaches. All of these less serious headaches can be cured relatively easily.

Types of Headaches

Physicians divide headaches into four types.

1. Muscular also known as myogenic: This type of headache caused by tightening of facial or neck muscles. In this, pain is usually in the forhead. One of the most common headaches is tension headache.

2. Vascular headaches: This type headache causes of migraines. The difference between the two is that migraine pain is at the temples not the centre of the head. The symptoms of this headache are stomach discomort, nausea and sensitivity to light. Migraines pains are more found in womans.

3. Traction and inflammatory headaches are more often signs of more serious problems.

Maximum headaches can be treated by simple non prescription pain medications. If you have migraines, then you need prescription and there are many medicines are fairly successful. But still your headache is hurting you after taking medicines. Then in this case, you should consult with your doctor.

If still your headache pain is continuous, then tests will be conducted to look for anything that might be causing the headache pain. The tests like CT scan or MRI, blood work and urine analysis. Most headache pain is found to have a simple explanation.
